What is a MOOC?

The term MOOC, or massive open online courses, refers to enormous, open-access courses of study that are conducted autonomously over the Internet. A MOOC can be any online learning course that has been designed for a large number of students and which offers global access.

Although they may or may not result in qualifications for students, MOOCs are an excellent alternative to traditional training. Users can access quality learning content created through authoring tools, and hosted on an array of cloud learning platforms.

History and evolution of MOOCs

MOOCs first hit the scene in 2008, when George Siemens and Stephen Downes, professors at the University of Manitoba, Canada, offered a course called “Connectivism and Connective Knowledge.” This course, which attracted over 2,000 students, was considered the first MOOC.

By 2012 (the year of the MOOC) several major universities and institutions began launching their own MOOC platforms. One of the first to do so was Stanford University (with Coursera), followed by MIT and Harvard (edX) and finally Udacity. During this period, thousands of students from around the world began to enroll on the courses offered by these platforms, leading to rapid growth, expansion and diversification. This continued until 2021, when pandemic restrictions caused an explosion in the demand for online courses, mostly due to forced confinements and the closure of face-to-face educational institutions.

The main characteristics of MOOCs

The key features of MOOCs can be identified by looking at their own acronym:

  • Massive: This is one of the traits that make these courses so profitable. MOOCs place no limit on the number of students who can join the course. Anyone who wishes can attend, regardless of their professional, educational or socioeconomic background.
  • Open: Courses are open, which means that their contents are freely available to view on the Internet.
  • Online: Courses are developed and carried out online, which allows students to enjoy both synchronous and asynchronous resources. Additionally, users have the opportunity to interact with one another through the creation of active communities.

  • Possibility of certifications: Many MOOCs offer certifications that can be helpful when it comes to professional development and career progression. Generally, these qualifications tend to be free or cheaper than those of traditional programs.
  • Closer collaboration: Students get to interact with peers from around the world, enriching the learning experience and stimulating a global perspective.

The disadvantages of MOOCs

  • High dropout rate: Many students eagerly enroll in MOOCs, but fail to complete them due to lack of commitment or sustained motivation.
  • Variable quality: The quality of courses can vary significantly depending on the specific provider and course.
  • Lack of accreditation: Not all MOOCs are accredited, which can limit their ability to be formally recognized in some academic and professional contexts.

MOOCs provide an excellent opportunity to offer learning to a global audience. However, they do present significant challenges to the learner that must be addressed in order to maximize their effectiveness and utility.
