What is the ADDIE model? 

The ADDIE Model is an instructional design methodology based on 5 stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. 

This model was created in 1975 at Florida State University as part of the development of training programs for the United States Army but has since become a guiding principle in the creation of e-learning materials. Why? Mainly due to its simplicity and effectiveness. 

In the early days, instructors were required to complete each stage of the ADDIE model before moving on to the next. But over the years, the model has become more interactive and dynamic. 

ADDIE Model Phases 

These are the 5 phases of the ADDIE Model: 


In the analysis phase of the ADDIE Model, the goal is to gather information about the project at hand, such as data about the audience, learning objectives, available resources, and other relevant considerations. 


Next, in the design phase, the structure of the course or training program is defined. Objectives are established, an action plan is created, instructional formats are determined, and metrics are set to measure the program’s effectiveness. 


In this phase, the learning materials are created, including presentations, videos, interactive activities, assessments, and other resources necessary to support the learning process. The main goal in this phase of the ADDIE Model is to develop high-quality, engaging resources that align with objectives. 


The implementation stage refers to the launch of the project, which involves delivering the final materials to the learners. This can be done through e-learning software, in-person sessions, or a combination of both. 


In this phase, the success of the training program is analyzed, and information about its effectiveness is collected. Evaluation methods are used to measure results in context of learning objectives and gather feedback from participants.

Advantages of using ADDIE 

The ADDIE Model offers several significant advantages in the field of e-learning. Some of them include: 

  • Providing a structured approach that facilitates the development of teaching materials. 
  • Flexibility and adaptability to different contexts and needs. 
  • Emphasizing the learner and understanding the needs and characteristics of the target audience. 
  • Promoting continuous improvement and allowing for changes and adjustments in future courses, contributing to a continuous learning model. 

Limitations of ADDIE 

Despite its benefits, there are also some limitations of the ADDIE Model that should be taken into account: 

  • The sequential approach can be time-consuming, especially in extensive or complex projects. 
  • It requires adequate resources, such as trained personnel and technological tools. 
  • It focuses on the design and development of content rather than the interaction between students and instructors.
