Content curation: a way to increase the power of your e-learning course

Very often, when we decide to create an online course, we’re not starting from scratch. The first thing we do is collect and organize the content we have scattered about in different repositories and formats: texts that appear on our website, presentations we share in Google Drive or Slideshare, Youtube or Vimeo videos, different PDFs, etc.

We filter for what is of interest to the student, what is of value, what the student knows or should know. We structure it and make sense of it, i.e. we perform content curation applicable to e-learning. We use this technique to create the new course based on selections from all that content.

What would happen if we could embed that content directly into our course? Well, it would be like having a course with super powers. We wouldn’t have to limit ourselves to the possibilities of the authoring tool we’re using to create it; we could expand these possibilities tenfold… and make the job of creating a course even easier than it already is.

What content from other sources can you benefit from with isEazy Author? From forms to videos and podcasts, you have a whole world to explore:

  • External web page links: create a link to any web page using the Link function. When is a good time to do it? Think about a welcome course where you want students to visit the company’s website. A good time to do it could also be when that external page provides additional information to help them understand the content (for example, when you include a link to a library of related articles). This will allow students who want to further their knowledge to do so without negatively affecting the experience of others.
  • Attached Documents: want to provide a PDF that’s ready for your students to download? Add it using the Download function. In fact, you can add any type of document (Word, Excel, etc.), including a compressed file (zip).
  • PPT presentations: if you generally use Slideshare to share your presentations, you can now embed them in your online course. You can also find the Slideshare icon within the Embed element. Copy your presentation’s URL, paste it into isEazy Author and it’s ready to be shared!

  • Google Docs: Did you know you can embed all the content you have in Google Docs in isEazy Author? Check out everything you can do:
    • Documents: if instead of downloading the document you want students to read it directly on the screen, you can embed it using Google Docs. Just copy and paste the link to the document. That’s it! Embedding documents via Google Docs also provides a huge advantage when updating because the content is “alive”. Whenever you need to update the embedded document you won’t need to edit the course at all. Just change it in Google Docs and the changes will automatically be reflected in your course. When you’re disseminating your course from a training platform this can save you hours of time otherwise spent on management tasks.
    • PowerPoint Presentations: Do you want to use your PowerPoint presentation as the basis for your online course? No problem! You can do this with Google Docs. Simply upload your presentation to your Google Drive, open it with Google Presentations, and click Share. Google Drive will then create a link that you can use to embed your presentation in isEazy Author using the Embed element. You can do all of this in less than five minutes!
    • Excel graphics and tables: Do you usually work with Excel charts and tables and want to present them in an innovative way? Embed your graphics in isEazy Author via Google Docs and take the communication of your reports to another level.
    • Forms: you can pause your course and take the opportunity to ask students’ opinions about a relevant topic. By inserting forms from Google Docs, students can respond without having to leave the course and continue learning without batting an eye.
  • Videos: the Embed function allows you to add any video you find on Youtube, Vimeo and Kaltura to your courses. This allows you to enrich your courses with multimedia effortlessly.

  • Podcasts: the possibilities of enriching your course with multimedia elements don’t end with video. You can also add any podcast from iVoox. Ask your students to listen to audio content and answer questions later. This will definitely keep them engaged!

Remember that if you use external content created by other people in your courses you must respect copyrights. Follow good practices and mention the authors after reviewing the conditions for sharing each piece of content.
